He retired from the international competition in August 2014, but his impact on the Cameroonian team remains unmatched.

Top Scorers

Laurent Pokou – 14 Goals

Laurent Pokou played for the Ivory Coast national team-the Elephants. He held the record of the highest goal scorer of the Africa Cup of Nations for over a decade before Samuel Eto’o broke it.

Notably, these 14 goals were scored in 8 fixtures, and 5 were in a single match with Ethiopia. He won the title of the top scorer in the Africa Cup of Nations in 1968 and 1970.

He was the finest footballer Ivory Coast had seen before the era of Didier Drogba. Long after he had hung his boots, his long-running record that stood for almost 40 years will remain for generations to come. Pokou died in 2016.

Rashid Yekini – 13 Goals

Rashid Yekini is the all-time Nigeria’s leading scorer, and he ranks third among AFCON top scorers with 13 goals to his name. Having waited 14 years, Yekini led the Super Eagles to win the Africa Cup of Nations finals in 1994.

During this tournament, he scored a whopping 5 goals, which saw the Nigerian Team win the goals medal, and he was named the tournament’s most valuable player. With his 13 goals record, the departed icon is, to date, the top scorer in Nigeria.

Hassan El Shazly – 12 Goals

Hassan El-Shazly is Egypt’s leading all-time Africa Cup of Nations scorer. His peak success was when he netted 6 goals in the 1963 AFCON tournament in Ghana.

He was named the Player of the Competition. He remained the top goalscorer in four different seasons, but his team never won an AFCON trophy.

Although, he passed on in 2015, but his legacy still holds even after legendary scorers who came after him, like Patrick Mboma and Didier Drogba.

Patrick Mboma – 11 Goals

Patrick Mboma is a prolific Cameroon football striker who played a crucial role in his team, Golden Generation winning the 2000 and the 2002 Africa Cup of Nations. Overall, he has 11 goals in his list of AFCON matches and was renowned for his incredible left foot scoring long-range goals.

Didier Drogba – 11 Goals

Didier Drogba was an outstanding striker who represented his Ivory Coast team, The Elephants, in five Africa Cup of Nations finals between 2006 and 2013.

Gaining aspiration from the legendary Laurent Pokou, who also played for The Elephants, Drogba, was determined to see his team win a title. Although he retired without ever lifting the continent’s most prestigious cup, he sure did score significant goals.

Ndaye Mulamba – 10 Goals

Ndaye Mulamba is a renowned scorer from the Democratic Republic of Congo who played a key role in Zaire’s winning the 1974 Africa Cup of Nations. His outstanding 9 goals contribution in 6 matches earned him the Player of the Tournament award.

He retained the record of most scored goals in AFCON history from 1968 until 2008 when Eto’o shattered it.

Joel Tiéhi – 10 Goals

While Joel Tiéhi had actively played for Ivory Coast since 1992, it was not until 1994 and 1998 that his career found grounding. In these two tournaments, he scored 4 goals which played a huge role in propelling The Elephants to the third position.

Overall, Tiéhi has scored 10 goals in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament, earning him a position among AFCON top scorers.

Kalusha Bwalya is Zambia’s all-time scorer who played in the National team-Chipolopolo. His immense contribution during the 1994 AFCON saw his club in the runners-up position after losing to Nigeria’s Super Eagles.

This was still considered a huge achievement for Zambia since they had, a year earlier, lost their team players in a gruesome plane crash.
