One-time German Champion Joins Borussia

Wolfsburg's head coach Niko Kovac follows the Bundesliga soccer match between VfL Wolfsburg and VfB Stuttgart

Last week, Borussia Dortmund decided to part ways with Nuri Sahin. The former BVB player managed the team for 27 matches, achieving 12 victories, 4 draws, and 1 loss.

The club’s management at Signal Iduna Park was dissatisfied with the team’s position in the Bundesliga and dismissed the Turkish coach. Mike Tullberg, the U19 team manager, temporarily stepped into the role.

The Dane led BVB in matches against Werder Bremen (2:2) and Shakhtar Donetsk (3:1). However, there are increasing signs that a new head coach may take over as early as the upcoming game against Heidenheim.

Patrick Berger revealed that Niko Kovac will be the new coach. Although Kovac’s name was circulating in the media, it seemed that no final decision had been made.

Kovac, who has previously managed teams like Eintracht, Bayern Munich, Monaco, and Wolfsburg, has been unemployed since March 2024. The 53-year-old is expected to sign a contract lasting one and a half years, meaning he will be responsible for Dortmund’s results until the end of the 2025/26 season, and not just until June 30, 2025, as initially thought.

The Croatian coach has one German championship title, won with Bayern (18/19), two national cups with Eintracht (17/18) and Bayern (18/19), and one Super Cup (18/19) in his accolades.
