AFCON 2025 Qualifiers: Matchday 4 Results & Overview

Published on

The AFCON 2025 qualifiers moved into Matchday 4 this week, with all 48 teams competing vigorously for a coveted spot in the championship next year.

Each team will play a total of six matches during the qualifiers, facing each team in their group twice. The top two teams from each of the 12 groups will progress, except for Group A, where one additional team will join the hosts, Morocco, who have already secured their place.

Several pre-qualifier favourites have lived up to expectations with strong performances so far. Morocco, Egypt, Algeria, Angola, Ivory Coast, and DR Congo have maintained perfect records.

However, Ghana’s performance has been the most surprising, having failed to secure a win in the first half of the qualifiers. They suffered a defeat at home against Angola and were later beaten by Niger and Sudan in their away fixtures.

As the competition remains fierce, let’s delve into some recent results and highlights from the qualifiers.

Cameroon Triumphs Over Kenya 1-0 and Strengthens Hold on Group J

Cameroon secured a 1-0 victory against Kenya at the Nelson Mandela National Stadium on Monday. The win keeps them at the top of Group J with 10 points, while Kenya lags behind in third place with only 4 points, trailing behind Zimbabwe.

The decisive goal was scored in the 63rd minute when Boris Enow delivered a low free-kick from the edge of the box. The shot evaded the Kenyan defense and nestled in the bottom right corner, breaking the stalemate.

Kenya made numerous attempts to equalize but were unable to find the net. Their best opportunity came in the 54th minute when Michael Olunga’s left-footed shot narrowly missed. Alphonce Omija also had a significant chance in stoppage time but headed the ball wide.

With this triumph, Cameroon has positioned itself as a strong contender to qualify as one of the leading two teams from Group J. In contrast, Kenya faces a daunting challenge.

Having accumulated only 4 points across 4 games, they must now close the gap on Zimbabwe, who currently hold 8 points with two matches remaining. For any chance at success, Kenya must secure a victory on November 11th against Zimbabwe at the National Sports Stadium in Harare.

Algeria Secures AFCON Spot by Defeating Togo

Algeria bolstered their lead in Group E with a 1-0 triumph over Togo in a recent Group E encounter, achieving their fourth consecutive win. This victory brings their total points to 12, confirming their qualification for the AFCON 2025 tournament next year.

Togo’s prospects appear bleak after this loss, as they have only managed 2 points from four matches, consisting of two draws and two defeats. Equatorial Guinea holds the second position in the group with 7 points from two wins, a draw, and a loss.

Ramy Bensebaini of Algeria scored the decisive goal through a penalty kick, sealing the victory for his team. Just days earlier, Togo suffered a 5-1 defeat in Algeria, a result that may offer some optimism moving forward.

However, Togo’s situation worsened as Equatorial Guinea defeated Liberia 2-1 on Monday, strengthening their hold on the second spot. Togo must now aim for a win against Liberia in their next match and hope for an Algerian victory over Equatorial Guinea to keep their advancement hopes alive.

Should Togo fail to qualify, it will mark their fourth consecutive absence from the next stage of the tournament.

Since the departure of key players like Emmanuel Adebayor, the team has struggled to perform in major competitions. Their most notable AFCON achievement was reaching the quarter-finals in South Africa in 2013.
