English Premier League 2024/25: Matchday 7 Recap

Published on

Matchday 7 of the 2024/25 English Premier League wrapped up on Sunday, marking the conclusion of another thrilling week. Liverpool remains atop the leaderboard with 18 points after a narrow 1-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park. Both Manchester City and Arsenal continued their strong form by clinching wins against Fulham and Southampton, respectively, leaving them just a single point behind the leaders.

Week 7 did not disappoint in terms of surprises. Tottenham suffered a setback, losing to Brighton at Falmer Stadium on Sunday night, which resulted in their drop to 9th place in the standings. In another unexpected turn, Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest, causing them to fall four points behind Liverpool.

Man City Scrape Past Fulham with a 3-2 Victory

Mateo Kovacic was the hero of the match for Manchester City, scoring twice to help his team edge out a gritty Fulham side. This victory propels City to 17 points, keeping them in close contention with Liverpool at the top.

Although Man City dominated the early stages of the game, it was Fulham who broke the deadlock. Raul Jimenez delivered a brilliant backheel cross, allowing Andreas Pereira to chip the ball into the net from close range.

Adama Traore came close to doubling Fulham’s lead but was thwarted by Ederson in a one-on-one situation, and later missed again from inside the penalty area.

Man City’s equalizer came in the 32nd minute through a goal from Kovacic. He doubled his tally soon after the break with a striking effort from the edge of the box, putting City ahead 2-1.

Jeremy Doku’s goal in the 82nd minute seemed to have secured the win for City, but Fulham showed resilience and continued to fight back until the final whistle.Substitute Rodrigo Muniz found space in the box and scored, giving his team a glimmer of hope in the final moments. However, Fulham couldn’t manage to breach the City defense again and ultimately lost 3-2.

City have now gone 50 home games unbeaten across all competitions, becoming only the fourth English top-flight team to achieve this milestone.

Nottingham Forest and Chelsea Play to a 1-1 Draw in a Tactical Clash

Chelsea’s five-match winning streak was halted on Sunday as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Nottingham Forest at Stamford Bridge.

Forest took the lead early in the second half when 32-year-old striker Chris Wood scored in the 49th minute. Chelsea quickly responded, leveling the match just eight minutes later with a left-footed strike from Noni Madueke.

Referee Chris Kavanagh issued a red card to Forest’s Ward-Prowse for deliberately stopping a counter-attack by Nicolas Jackson late in the game. Ward-Prowse had received a yellow card earlier for fouling Cole Palmer.

Despite being down to ten men for the remainder of the match, Forest managed to hold on for a 1-1 draw.

Chelsea will next face Liverpool on October 20th in a match that could significantly impact their standing in the table.
