English Premier League 2024/25: Matchday 8 Recap

Published on

Liverpool maintains their lead at the top of the leaderboard with 21 points, following a 2-1 triumph over Chelsea on Matchday 8 of the 2024/25 EPL season. Meanwhile, Manchester City trails by just one point after a narrow victory against the Wolves. In contrast, Arsenal’s defeat to Bournemouth has left them four points adrift.

Midway through the table, Bournemouth and Manchester United both celebrated significant wins, bringing their totals to 11 points. Conversely, Fulham and Newcastle suffered setbacks, pushing them into the 8th and 9th positions respectively.

At the bottom of the standings, Ipswich Town, Crystal Palace, Southampton, and the Wolves continued to face difficulties, falling further behind. As the bottom three teams face relegation, these four seem to be locked in a fight for survival.

Red Card Proves Costly for Arsenal in 2-0 Defeat to Bournemouth

Arsenal’s woes continued with another first-half red card, resulting in a 2-0 loss to Bournemouth at the Vitality Stadium on Saturday. The incident occurred when William Saliba fouled Evanilson in the 20th minute following a misguided pass from Leandro Trossard.

Initially, referee Robert Jones issued a yellow card, but this was upgraded to a red after a VAR review. This marked the third occasion this season that Arsenal had been reduced to 10 players.

While Arsenal managed to keep a clean sheet in the first half, Bournemouth broke the deadlock in the 70th minute. A smartly executed corner allowed substitute Ryan Christie to score, putting the home team in front.

Arsenal’s substitute, Gabriel Martinelli, had a golden opportunity to lead, following an error by the goalkeeper, but failed to capitalize.

The evening took a further downturn for Arsenal as Justin Kluivert, coming off the bench for Bournemouth, confidently converted a penalty after David Raya fouled Evanilson in the penalty area.

This loss leaves Arsenal stranded on 17 points, trailing behind both Manchester City and Liverpool. They do, however, have a significant chance to climb the standings next week with a match against Liverpool on Sunday. Sadly, they might be missing several key players, including Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Oleksandr Zinchenko, all of whom are questionable for Matchday 9.

Man City Secures 2-1 Victory Over Wolves With Dramatic Late Goal

Manchester City’s defender John Stones emerged as the savior in their 2-1 win against Wolverhampton Wanderers on Sunday. This victory elevated them to the summit of the Premier League temporarily and marked a club milestone of 31 consecutive league matches without defeat.

The reigning champions controlled possession throughout the game but conceded the opening goal. Wolves’ striker Jorgen Strand Larsen found the net in the seventh minute following an impeccable cross from Nelson Semedo.

Semedo almost doubled the lead but was denied by a crucial save from Ederson. Shortly after, City defender Josko Gvardiol seized the opportunity, delivering a beautiful shot past Jose Sa for the equalizer at the 33-minute mark.

Despite several opportunities in the second half, Man City couldn’t edge in front. It was only through Stones’ header in stoppage time that they finally broke the deadlock, securing all 3 points. The goal underwent a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review and was subsequently upheld, giving the visitors a vital victory.

Despite trailing Liverpool by a single point, Manchester City are relieved to have successfully navigated their match against Wolves without any issues. Looking ahead, they will face Southampton at the Etihad Stadium next Saturday, aiming to potentially reclaim the top position in the standings.
