English Premier League 2024/25: Week 2 Results

Published on

Week 2 of the EPL kicked off yesterday, showcasing many top teams and players. Man United faced an unexpected defeat against Brighton, marking their first loss of the season. Meanwhile, Arsenal and Man City managed to fend off their opponents, maintaining a perfect record through the first two weeks.

Here’s a detailed look at some of the most significant events from Week 2.

Haaland Nets Hat-trick in 4-1 Victory for Manchester City Against Ipswich

Erling Haaland continued his impressive form, scoring a hat-trick in Manchester City’s dominant 4-1 win at the Etihad Stadium yesterday.

Surprisingly, Ipswich struck the first blow when Sammie Szmodics managed to slot a shot through Ederson’s legs in the seventh minute. Ipswich, having returned to the Premier League after a 22-year absence, briefly entertained the dream of toppling the reigning champions.

However, their joy was short-lived as Manchester City responded with three goals in just four minutes.

Haaland equalized with a penalty, awarded after a video assistant referee review overturned Sam Allison’s initial dive decision against Savinho.

Kevin de Bruyne then put City ahead when Ipswich goalkeeper Arijanet Muric hesitated, allowing de Bruyne to capitalize. Haaland extended the lead to 3-1 in the 16th minute with a deft finish.

The scoreline could have been even more lopsided, as Manchester City hit the goalpost twice. Ipswich had a prime opportunity to reduce the deficit, but a strong penalty appeal was denied after Leif Davis was tackled by Savinho inside the box.

The second half mirrored the first with both teams displaying consistent performances. Ilkay Gundogan, having rejoined City from Barcelona, received a warm reception from the fans. Haaland further extended the lead by driving home a low shot from distance, securing his hat-trick.

With this win, Manchester City maintains a perfect record from their two games so far. Ipswich, on the other hand, are still on the hunt for their first points after also losing their opening match to Liverpool.

Arsenal Triumph Over Aston Villa With Second-Half Surge

Arsenal emerged victorious against Aston Villa, claiming their second win of the Premier League season with a 2-0 scoreline.

Last season, Villa had dealt a significant blow to Arsenal’s title aspirations with a defeat at the Emirates Stadium in mid-April, a loss that was pivotal in ending Arsenal’s title chase.

Goalkeeper David Raya was instrumental, making spectacular second-half saves from Ollie Watkins, keeping the game level and setting the stage for Arsenal’s success. Moments after Raya’s heroics, Trossard capitalized with a precise finish to open the scoring.

Partey added another goal, easing any remaining tension and sealing the victory for Arsenal.

Despite not matching their performances from last season, Aston Villa dominated possession for a considerable period. Watkins, who had been their key scorer with 19 league goals last season, failed to convert opportunities. He missed a straightforward first-half chance and was denied a goal by Raya’s impressive save, missing what should have been a sure-fire diving header.

Arsenal’s next opponent in Week 3 is Brighton, while Aston Villa will strive for a comeback against Leicester City.
