Manchester City has been highly proactive in this winter’s transfer market. They have invested nearly 150 million euros in three players – Omar Marmoush, Vitor Reis, and Abdukodir Khusanov. Pep Guardiola is leading a squad overhaul at Etihad Stadium following a lengthy crisis that has sidelined the Citizens from the Premier League title race.
Recent results indicate that significant issues persist. Manchester City is particularly lacking in midfield, especially after Rodri’s injury, which highlighted their need for top-tier talent. The acquisition of a new midfielder was planned for this winter, but this priority was postponed in favor of other reinforcements.
However, as the transfer window drew to a close, the English champions reignited their pursuit of a new midfielder. The market options are limited, and Nico Gonzalez from FC Porto caught Guardiola’s eye.
A product of Barcelona‘s academy, Gonzalez made a permanent move to Portugal in 2023. At FC Porto, he has demonstrated his capability to perform at the highest level, accumulating seven goals and six assists across all competitions since the season began.
For the Portuguese club, the terms are clear. Gonzalez will only be released if his 60 million euro buyout clause is activated. Manchester City considers this fee excessive and has attempted to negotiate more favorable terms. According to “Record,” despite the lack of an agreement, the Citizens are not withdrawing their interest.
If they are determined enough, they will eventually activate the clause and bring the Spaniard in. Although he has been listed in the squad for Monday’s match with FC Porto, he might not play if the English champions manage to complete the deal in time.
