As Kenya prepares to co-host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), newly appointed Harambee Stars coach Benni McCarthy is making bold moves to rejuvenate the national team. The South African tactician, unveiled in Nairobi earlier this year, has set his sights on the country’s promising U20 squad, aiming to inject youthful energy and fresh talent into the senior ranks.

McCarthy, whose coaching pedigree includes stints at Manchester United and in the South African Premier League, faces the formidable task of transforming Kenya’s football fortunes. With the 2027 AFCON on the horizon, he is keenly aware that building a competitive team requires a blend of experience and youth. “We will transform negativity into positivity, and people will be surprised by what our team can achieve.

Central to his strategy is the integration of standout performers from the Kenya U20 team, which recently qualified for the U20 AFCON. Among those catching the coach’s eye are KCB defender Manzur Okwaro and AFC Leopards midfielder Kelly Madada. Both players have been lauded for their composure and technical ability, with Okwaro’s defensive prowess and Madada’s midfield creativity marking them as future stars for the senior team.

McCarthy’s approach is already evident in his recent squad selections. For the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, he named a provisional squad that features a mix of seasoned veterans and emerging talents, including Madada. This signals a clear intent to provide young players with invaluable experience at the highest level, while also phasing out some established names to make room for new blood.

The benefits of this youth-driven strategy are well documented. According to FIFA studies, over three-quarters of players at the 2022 World Cup had previously represented their countries at youth levels, underscoring the importance of a strong development pathway. By giving young players like Okwaro and Madada opportunities in the senior team, McCarthy is not only preparing them for the rigors of international football but also ensuring the Harambee Stars have a dynamic, adaptable squad ready for the challenges of AFCON 2027.
