Paris Olympics 2024 Week 1 Roundup

The 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris have been action-packed since their kickoff. Over 200 medals have been awarded, highlighting various sports.

In basketball, both the USA and Canada dominate the men’s games, along with Germany and France. In women’s basketball, the United States and Serbia shine, with France and Spain also in top form.

For football, France topped Group A, with Japan surprising everyone by winning all their Group D matches.

In gymnastics, Simone Biles secured another all-around gold. Team USA and Japan took the women’s and men’s team golds respectively.

Currently, China leads the medal table with 11 golds, while the U.S. has a total of 37 medals.

Basketball

The basketball competitions began last week, with all teams playing two matches; the USA, Canada, Germany, and France are unbeaten in the men’s division, while the USA and Serbia shine in the women’s.

The Group Stage’s final games will determine the quarter-finalists, including the top teams and the best two third-placed teams from each group. The women’s quarter-finals, set for August 7th, promise excitement, notably with strong performances from France and Spain, the host nations.

Football

The men’s football tournament in Paris has completed its first round, with France leading Group A undefeated and the USA also qualifying.

Morocco, Argentina, Egypt, Spain, Japan, and Paraguay round out the quarter-finalists, with Japan’s flawless group stage run notable. The quarter-finals are set for August 2-3.

Gymnastics

Simone Biles won her gold at Paris 2024, with Brazil’s Rebeca Andrade taking silver.

Shinnosuke Oka of Japan clinched the men’s all-around gold, while the USA and Japan won the women’s and men’s team golds, respectively. The USA has won 4 gymnastics medals so far, with more expected as individual events continue.
