The second week of Italy’s premier football competition, Serie A, delivered another thrilling round of games.
Defending champions Inter Milan rebounded from their 2-2 tie at Genoa last weekend with a 2-0 victory over Lecce in their first home game. Conversely, AC Milan’s slow start to the season continued with a 2-1 defeat to Parma, placing them surprisingly in 14th place. The standout performance so far has been from Torino, who currently sit in second place with one win and one draw after two weeks.
Here’s a detailed look at the results from Matchday 2.
Inter Triumph Over Lecce 2-0 in Home Debut
Inter Milan, the reigning champions, secured a 2-0 win at home against Lecce in Serie A on Saturday, with goals from Matteo Darmian and Hakan Calhanoglu. This victory marks the team’s first win of the season, following a draw against Genoa in Week 1. With this triumph, Inter momentarily climbs to the top of the standings, pending the outcome of two other matches scheduled for Monday.
The squad didn’t wait long to score, as Darmian netted a goal within the opening five minutes. Calhanoglu then doubled the lead with a penalty in the 69th minute after Kialonda Gaspar fouled Marcus Thuram in the penalty area. Notably, Calhanoglu maintains a perfect record with 17 successful penalties in Serie A matches.
However, it is important to note that Inter played without their captain, Lautaro Martinez, who is currently sidelined due to a muscle injury.
Lecce have had a rough start with two consecutive losses this season, including a 4-0 defeat to Atalanta in their opener. They will strive to regain form in Week 3 when they face Cagliari on August 31st.
Torino Upsets Atalanta with 2-1 Victory
Che Adams celebrated his inaugural goal for Torino as his team secured their first win of the season against Atalanta on Sunday. This match also marked Adams’ first start for Torino following his debut as a substitute in a 2-2 draw with AC Milan last week. His decisive goal in the 49th minute propelled Torino into second place in the Serie A standings.
Atalanta initially took the lead midway through the first half thanks to Mateo Retegui, who expertly headed in a cross from Davide Zappacosta. However, Torino quickly responded, leveling the score within five minutes as Ivan Ilic delivered a stunning finish past Carnesecchi.
Early in the second half, Adams found the net after Duvan Zapata’s shot was parried by goalkeeper Marco Carnesecchi, allowing the Scottish striker to capitalize on the rebound.
In stoppage time, Atalanta had a chance to draw level, but Mario Pasalic missed a penalty kick awarded due to Valentino Lazaro’s foul on Federico Cassa.
