History of Jesse Were

Jesse Jackson Were was born on 19. April 1989 in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi, division of Kibera. Being an exceptional talent from the start earned Jesse a trial with Kenya Commercial Bank FC. Unfortunately, it wasn’t meant to be as he was turned down leading him to almost hang up his boots in despair.

Were had a very tough upbringing as he grew up in poverty and was constantly surrounded by drugs and violence. Nevertheless, it didn’t stop him from finishing as one of the top students in class at the Toy Primary School.

Jesse Were In Kenya

Were’s boyhood club was the Kibera Black Stars, which played in the Nairobi Region League. He was unexpectedly picked up as a youngster by Mathare United as he impressed in a friendly match against them. But the journey towards success was hard at first due to his inexperience.

Nevertheless, his hard work and dedication allowed him to become one of the most lethal strikers in the Kanyan FKF Premier League. He appeared for Mathare United 49 times and scored 13 goals. This earned him a transfer to Tusker FC where his form reached a whole new level.

Playing between 2012 and 2015 for Tusker FC, Were was able to score 46 goals, making him one of the most elite strikers in FKF Premier League history.

Jesse Were International Career

Were made his career move when he joined the Zambia Super League outfit ZESCO United F.C.He didn’t only continue his goal-scoring efforts there but almost broke the world record by scoring a hat-trick in three consecutive games for ZESCO. A feat he is currently tied with Cristiano Ronaldo and bettered only by the Japanese forward Nakayama Masashi, the current record holder.

Were went on to score 105 goals for the Zambian team in 120 games since he joined in 2016. Unfortunately, he hasn’t transferred the same form to the Kenyan national team. He did make 26 appearances so far for the Harambee Stars but has scored only a single goal for them.
