Gor Mahia’s influential midfielder Austin Odhiambo is at the center of major transfer speculation following a standout season that has not only reignited his club’s ambitions but also caught the eye of top clubs across Africa and Europe. With Gor Mahia’s grip on the FKF Premier League title slipping, Odhiambo’s future is now the subject of intense debate.

Odhiambo (25) has been the heartbeat of Gor Mahia’s midfield this season. Delivering performances that have made him one of the most sought-after players in the Kenyan Premier League. In the 2023/24 campaign, he racked up an impressive 12 goals and 13 assists. Making him the midfielder with the highest goal contributions in the league.

His form has not gone unnoticed on the international stage either. Odhiambo was recently called up to the Harambee Stars squad, replacing veteran Victor Wanyama for the upcoming friendlies against Chad. He also made a mark at the 2024 COSAFA Cup in South Africa, scoring two goals in three games and receiving the man of the match award in the final group stage fixture against Zimbabwe.

Gathering Interest from Abroad

Odhiambo’s stellar season has attracted significant interest from clubs outside Kenya. Belgian side KAA Gent, known for scouting Kenyan talent, have been at the forefront. Previous attempts to sign him fell through last summer, so they are making another go at Austin. Rwandan giants APR FC and Tanzanian powerhouse Young Africans (Yanga SC) have also reportedly expressed interest in securing his signature.

Sources indicate that Odhiambo’s omission from Gor Mahia’s squad for the CECAFA Kagame Cup was linked to ongoing transfer negotiations. Signaling that a move could be imminent.

Despite Odhiambo’s individual brilliance, Gor Mahia have faced a challenging 2024/25 season. With just two games remaining, the club sits second on the table behind Kenya Police FC. This likely means Gor Mahia will relinquish their league crown, adding further intrigue to Odhiambo’s transfer saga.

With his contract situation under close scrutiny and his stock rising, Odhiambo’s next move could define the next phase of his career. Whether he chooses to test himself in Europe with Gent, join regional heavyweights APR FC, or make a high-profile switch to Young Africans, his departure would mark the end of an era for Gor Mahia and the beginning of a new chapter for one of Kenya’s brightest football talents.
