Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy has finally explained Kenya’s controversial decision to withdraw from the CECAFA Four Nations Tournament in Arusha, Tanzania. McCarthy cited poor pitch conditions and safety concerns as the primary reasons behind the pullout. He stressed that the training pitches were in such bad shape that they posed a serious risk of injury to players. It could undermine their preparations for the upcoming 2024 African Nations Championship.

The tournament, which began on July 21, was meant to be a critical warm-up for Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, and the guest team Congo ahead of CHAN 2024. However, the Harambee Stars’ technical bench led by McCarthy, conducted a thorough assessment of the facilities and logistics upon arrival and found the conditions unsuitable for a team aiming for high-performance competition. The team also faced issues such as transportation delays, disorganised match scheduling, and inadequate recovery facilities. All of which disrupted their training routine and threatened overall player welfare.

McCarthy does not want to risk injuries, claiming that his responsibility is to protect the players. He also wants to prepare them in the best way possible, emphasising the need to preserve player fitness for the more challenging CHAN tournament. The Football Kenya Federation supported the decision, stating that the withdrawal was strategic. They aim to focus on long-term success rather than short-term exposure in a substandard environment.

Kenya’s exit delivered a significant blow to the CECAFA Four Nations tournament’s competitive integrity and regional appeal. CECAFA Secretary General Auka Gecheo expressed disappointment. He highlighted that the organisers had gone to great lengths to meet Kenya’s demands. They were actually caught off guard by the last-minute withdrawal. Following Kenya’s withdrawal and the earlier exit of Congo, the competition now continues with just Uganda, Tanzania, and Senegal, the current CHAN champions

The CECAFA Four Nations tournament is held this year at the Karatu Stadium in Arusha, Tanzania. It serves as a vital preparatory platform for East and Central African teams ahead of CHAN 2024. Despite Kenya’s pullout, the tournament will proceed as scheduled, providing the remaining teams crucial match practice before the upcoming continental championship co-hosted by Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania.
