AFCON Teams | Which Teams Will Take Part in AFCON 2024?

The AFCON teams for the 2024 edition of the tournament have been finalised following the qualification stages. Find out more about the nations that will participate in one of Africa’s biggest football competitions in 2024.

AFCON 2024 Teams – Profiles

A number of the best AFCON teams are heading to Ivory Coast in January 2024 to play for the tournament title. In each section here, you can find out more about each team and how they could perform at the AFCON finals. 

AFCON Teams

Algeria

The Algeria team have won the AFCON title twice – most recently in 2019. Also, the North African nation was unbeaten in qualifying, winning five of six matches.

Angola

Angola team returns to the 2024 AFCON finals for the first time since 2019. The nation has never progressed past the quarter-finals. 

Burkina Faso 

In recent years, the Burkina Faso team has progressed in the AFCON tournaments and finished fourth in 2021. Also, the nation has finished in the top four on four occasions since 1998.

Cameroon

The Cameroon team is one of the most decorated nations in AFCON history. Since 1984, the Indomitable Lions have won the tournament five times. 

Cape Verde

The Cape Verde team are competing at just their fourth AFCON in 2024. They will be hoping to improve on their quarter-final finish in 2013 – their best finish to date.

DR Congo 

DR Congo won their qualification group and won four of six matches. Also, the DR Congo team finished third in the AFCON finals in 2015. 

Egypt

With star players like Mohammed Salah, the Egypt team are generally among the AFCON favourites. Also, the Pharaohs have the most AFCON title wins in the competition’s history (7). 

Equatorial Guinea

The Equatorial Guinea team won four and lost once in their qualification group. In recent AFCONs, they have reached the quarter-finals three times. 

Gambia 

The Gambia will play in just their second AFCOn finals. However, the Gambia team reached the quarter-finals in the 2021 edition. 

Ghana 

In the AFCON qualification, the Ghana team went unbeaten in their group. The Black Stars often perform well in the finals and have won the competition four times. 

Guinea 

In the 2024 AFCON, the Guinea team will play at their third consecutive finals. But their best finish came in 1976 when they finished as runners-up. 

Guinea-Bissau 

Guinea-Bissau lost just once during their qualification campaign. Due to this, the Guinea-Bissau team will hope to get out of the group stages for the first time.

Ivory Coast 

As the host nation and two-time AFCON winners, the Ivory Coast team are among the favourites to win the competition.

Mali

During qualifying, the Mali team won five of six matches. The nation has also finished in the top four on six separate occasions. 

Mauritania

2024 will be the Mauritania team’s third-ever finals appearance. However, the team has never progressed past the group phase.

Morocco 

Even though the Morocco team has only won the AFCON once, they will be confident after reaching the World Cup semi-finals in 2022. 

Mozambique 

The Mozambique team are competing at their first AFCON since 2010. They have only appeared three times previously and never progressed from their group. 

Namibia

Despite winning just one qualification game, the Namibia team will play at their fourth AFCON in 2024. 

Nigeria

The Nigeria team has finished in the top three at the finals 15 times, Also, the Super Eagles won five of their six qualifying matches. 

Senegal 

As the current title holders, the Senegal team are among the AFCON favourites. The Western African nations were also runners-up in 2019. 

South Africa

Since 2000, the South Africa team has never got further than the quarter-final stages. Their only AFCON win came in 1996.

Tanzania

The Tanzania team will play in just their second AFCON finals and just their second since 1980. 

Tunisia

Tunisia will head to their 16th consecutive AFCON tournament in 2024. But the Tunisia team has not progressed past the semi-final stages since 2004 when they last won the tournament. 

Zambia

The Zambia team has reached their first finals since 2015. The last time the Copper Bullets got out of the group stage, in 2012, they won the tournament.
