Belgian top-flight club K.A.A. Gent is closely monitoring Bristol City defender Zak Vyner. A player who has recently emerged as a key figure for both his club and the Kenyan national team. As Vyner enters the final year of his contract with Bristol City, Gent is evaluating him as a prime candidate to reinforce their defensive line ahead of the new season.

Vyner, standing at 1.87m, was born in Southwark, England, and grew up in Bath. Of Kenyan descent, he was recently called up to represent the Harambee Stars. Making him a player of significant interest to Kenyan football fans. His journey began at Bristol City’s academy, where he joined at the age of 10. Initially a winger, Vyner transitioned to central defence, where his physicality and reading of the game have become his trademarks.

Since making his professional debut for Bristol City in 2016, Vyner has accumulated nearly 200 league appearances for the Robins. Interspersed with loan spells at Accrington Stanley, Plymouth Argyle, Rotherham United, and Aberdeen. These experiences have shaped him into a versatile and reliable defender, comfortable both in the heart of defence and on the right flank.

The 2024/25 season has been particularly impressive for Vyner. He made 36 league appearances, contributing a goal and helping Bristol City maintain defensive solidity. Statistically, Vyner averaged 1.48 tackles, 0.90 interceptions, and 3.56 clearances per 90 minutes. While also blocking 40 shots across the campaign. His ability to play out from the back is notable, with an average of 64.6 passes attempted per match and a strong record of progressive passing. Ranking him among the Championship’s top defenders in this regard.

Vyner’s leadership qualities have also come to the fore. He captained Bristol City for the first time in March 2023, underlining his growing influence both on and off the pitch. His recent international call-up for Kenya further boosts his profile. Making him a potential asset for Gent as they look to rebuild their defence following key departures.

With his contract set to expire in a year, this summer could be pivotal for Vyner’s career. A move to Gent would see him join a club with a history of nurturing defensive talent and competing at the highest level in Belgium.
