Kenya’s footballing ambitions have received a ringing endorsement from one of Africa’s most respected voices. Former Nigeria and Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel has publicly praised Benni McCarthy for his early work as head coach of the Kenyan national team, expressing confidence that the South African legend can guide the Harambee Stars to unprecedented success-especially with the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) 2027 on the horizon, where Kenya will be one of the host nations.
Since his appointment in March 2025, McCarthy, a former South Africa striker and Manchester United assistant coach, has brought renewed energy and tactical acumen to the Harambee Stars. His tenure began with a dramatic 3-3 comeback draw against Gambia in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers, followed by a narrow 2-1 defeat to Gabon. While the results have been mixed, Mikel sees clear signs of progress and potential under McCarthy’s stewardship.
“Benni has got a good job, and after seeing the skills in Kenya, there’s no question the senior team has a lot of talent,” Mikel said during a recent visit to Nairobi. “He is going to inherit a good team, and I wish him all the best. I also wish the Kenya national team all the best as they continue to grow and develop. For me, it’s always nice when Kenya is in a tournament-it’s always a good tournament to watch”.
Kenya’s recent performances have been a blend of promise and frustration. In the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, the Harambee Stars concluded their campaign with a goalless draw against Namibia, finishing third in their group and missing out on qualification. Despite this setback, the mood around the team has shifted, with McCarthy’s arrival and Kenya’s confirmed role as co-hosts for AFCON 2027 injecting new optimism.
