Rising Stars striker Lawrence Okoth has announced himself on the continental stage with a memorable debut goal at the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), dedicating his achievement to his idol and national team captain, Michael Olunga. The 19-year-old forward netted Kenya’s opener in their Group B clash against Morocco in Cairo, a match that ended in a narrow 2-3 defeat for the Rising Stars.
Okoth, who proudly wears the number 14 jersey-famously donned by Olunga-has long drawn inspiration from the Harambee Stars captain. “He is a big inspiration to me. That is why I wear the number 14 shirt for the team in his honour. He has not yet spoken to me during the tournament, but whenever we meet, he always encourages me and motivates me greatly,” Okoth shared ahead of Kenya’s next fixture against Tunisia. The young striker plays his club football at the Michael Olunga Football Academy (MOFA), further cementing the connection between the two forwards.
Okoth’s playing style has already drawn comparisons to Olunga, with both players known for their physical presence, intelligent movement, and clinical finishing in front of goal. Like his idol, Okoth is a towering striker who thrives on leading the line and converting chances, making him a natural successor to Olunga’s legacy. The shared shirt number only adds to the sense of continuity between the two generations.
Reflecting on his first AFCON goal, Okoth expressed gratitude and ambition: “I thank God for giving me the strength to score my first AFCON goal. I feel good because it is my job to help the team score. It gives me confidence to compete for the golden boot, and having one goal is a good way to start,” he said.
Kenya’s national team coach, Benni McCarthy, has made clear his intention to promote young talent from the U20 side to the senior Harambee Stars squad. Okoth is widely regarded as one of the main prospects for elevation, with McCarthy emphasising his commitment to giving youth a chance: “I am a very big fan of giving young players an opportunity… I give young players a chance always, and I will do so,” McCarthy stated. His proactive approach and willingness to integrate promising talents bode well for Okoth’s future with the senior team.
