Europa League Group Stages
32 teams were drawn into eight separate groups on August 26 for the 2022/23 Europa League tournament. The draw included club teams from across European domestic football leagues.
Before the draw took place, each entrant was ranked on their domestic league performance and previous performances in European competitions, including the Champions League.
Teams could also not be drawn against another side from the same nation. For example, Arsenal and Manchester United could not be in the same group as they both play in the English Premier League.
The first round of fixtures for the Europa League kicked off on September 8, 2022. So far, each team has played all six matches to complete the group’s stages.
To qualify for the knockout round of the tournament, a team must finish on top of their group. If a club finishes second, they will enter a qualification play-off match against teams that have been eliminated from the Champions League competition.
These matches will be played across two legs, with a home and away fixture taking place on February 16 and February 23.
If a team gets through their play-off match, they will reach the Europa League finals and knockout phase. This begins with the round of 16 and progresses to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and outright final between the last two teams.
Below is an overview of each group and a description of qualified teams in the 2022/23 competition.
Group A: Arsenal, PSV Eindhoven, Bodø/Glimt and FC Zürich
Arsenal won Group A and earned 15 points after winning five of their six matches. PSV Eindhoven entered the knockout play-off matches in February as they finished second in the group.
However, Bodø/Glimt and FC Zürich were eliminated from the Europa League as both sides only won once this season.
Group B: Fenerbahçe, Rennes, AEK Larnaca and Dynamo Kyiv
In group B, Turkish side Fenerbahçe scored 14 points and topped the table.
French side Rennes were second with 12 points, and they faced Shakhtar Donetsk in the upcoming play-off match. AEK Larnaca and Dynamo Kyiv dropped out of the tournament after finishing third and fourth.
Group C: Real Betis, Roma, Ludogorets Razgrad and HJK Helsinki
Spanish side Real Betis won five and drew one of their Group C matches.
As a result, they won this group, while Roma finished second with 10 points. But Ludogorets Razgrad and HJK Helsinki did not qualify.
Group D: Union Saint-Gilloise, Union Berlin, Braga and Malmö FF
Belgian team Union Saint-Gilloise earned 13 points to qualify from Group D. They scored one more point than German team Union Berlin, who finished second and entered the play-offs.
However, Braga narrowly missed out, finishing third on ten points. Meanwhile, Malmö was bottom with zero points from six matches.
Group E: Real Sociedad, Manchester United, Sheriff Tiraspol and Omonia Nicosia
In Group E, Real Sociedad and Manchester United both finished on 15 points at the top of the table.
But, Sociedad qualified as group winners as they had a better goal difference than United. Sheriff Tiraspol and Omonia Nicosia were knocked out.
Group F: Feyenoord, Midtjylland, Lazio and Sturm Graz
All four teams in Group F scored eight points. Also, Feyenoord and Midtjylland had the same goal difference.
But Feyenoord finished as group winners due to a higher number of goals scored. Midtjylland then finished second, while Lazio and Sturm Graz were eliminated.
Group G: SC Freiburg, Nantes, Qarabağ and Olympiacos
German team SC Freiburg progressed to the knockout stages after scoring 14 points in Group G. Nantes entered the playoffs as they sealed nine points.
Qarabağ narrowly missed out on eight points, while Olympiacos finished bottom of the table with two points.
Group H: Ferencváros, Monaco, Trabzonspor and Red Star Belgrade
Hungarian team Ferencváros and French side Monaco completed Group H level on ten points. But, due to a better goal difference, Ferencváros advanced as group winners.
Monaco will face Bayer Leverkusen in their upcoming play-off. However, Trabzonspor and Red Star Belgrade did not progress after they finished third and fourth.
How Did We Choose our Europa League Predictions?
When forming Europa League betting tips, we consider various factors relating to the fixtures and teams. Below are some of the areas we consider before making any football predictions and tips.
Statistics
Looking at statistics helps to see team form, player streaks and any potential trends, such as both teams to score or high and low-scoring matches. Noticing forms and trends in individual teams can help to select an outright match winner and other accompanying Europa League tips.
Favourites
Pre-tournament favourites are important to consider when making Europa League predictions. Previous performances in European competitions can show how far a team is likely to go in the tournament.
Ultimately, if a team has had previous success in the Champions League or other high-profile tournaments, they are more likely to be considered favourites in many matches.
Group Standings
Performances in the group stages give a good insight into how a team or individual players could perform in later fixtures. If a team wins every fixture in their group, then they may become favourites in the knockout stages.
Alternatively, if a side just edges through the group standings in second, they may have less of a chance of further victory. Often, in World Cup predictions, a nation that wins its group convincingly has a good chance of progressing through the knockout phases.
Previous Winners
If a team has previously won the Europa League or the Champions League, they could be more often selected in predictions and tips. Overall, winners may have proven experience in elite competitions that could increase their chances of success.
How to Bet on the Europa League?
There are various ways to bet on the Europa League finals and fixtures this season.
Bookmakers should have a range of markets to choose from when placing a wager on this competition. Some of the most popular single bets on fixtures include outright match winners, under/over total goals, both teams to score, correct score bets and anytime goalscorers.
However, there are many future bets that bookmakers will provide so bettors have a wide selection when using their Europa League predictions. Some future markets may cover outright tournament winners, who could go the distance and win the entire competition.
Other future betting markets could also have odds for team performances, for example, the team that could score the most goals. Alternatively, individual player betting selections are available, where punters can choose a player they think may win the tournament’s golden boot.
More individual player betting selections could include the goalkeeper who keeps the cleanest sheets or a player who provides the most assists in the tournament.
