Europa League Group Stages

32 teams were drawn into eight separate groups on August 27 for the 2021/22 UEFA Europa League tournament. The draw included club teams from across European domestic football leagues.

Before the draw took place, each entrant was ranked on their domestic league performance and previous performances in European competitions, including the Champions League. Teams could also not be drawn against another side from the same nation. For example, Leicester and West Ham could not be in the same group as they both play in the English Premier League.

The first round of fixtures for the Europa League kicked off on September 16, 2021. So far, each team has played four matches in their respective groups, and they play six matches in total.

Europa League Group Stages

To qualify for the knockout round of the tournament, a team must finish top of their group. If a club finishes second, they will enter a qualification play-off match against teams that have been eliminated from the UEFA Champions League competition. These matches will be played across two legs with a home and away fixture taking place.

If a team gets past their play-off match, they will reach the Europa League finals and knockout phase. This begins with the round of 16 and progresses to the quarter-finals, semi-finals and outright final between the last two teams.

Below is an overview of each group and a description of qualified teams and those that could still qualify for the knockout stages.

Group A: Lyon, Sparta Prague, Rangers and Brøndby.

Lyon have already won Group A and qualified for the knockout stages. The former Champions League contestants have won all of their four matches and created an eight-point gap ahead of Sparta Prague. Rangers and Sparta Prague are level on four points, and they remain in the best position to reach the play-off. Although, Brøndby, on two points, have an outside chance of qualifying if they win their remaining two matches.

Group B: Monaco, Real Sociedad, PSV Eindhoven and Sturm Graz

Monaco leads the group on eight points and Real Sociedad and PSV Eindhoven trail on six and five points, respectively. All three sides could technically win the group, but Monaco needs a win and a draw to finish top. Sturm Graz have one point and would require two wins to stand any chance of finishing second and reaching the knockout stages.

Group C: Napoli, Legia Warszawa, Leicester, Spartak Moscow

All four teams in Group C still have a chance of finishing in first place, but Spartak Moscow are bottom on four points and they have the least chance of winning the table. Napoli leads Group C on seven points, and they are closely followed by Legia Warszawa (six points) and Leicester (five points). The three clubs are among the favourites to progress, but Napoli are in control and will secure an automatic qualification spot with two wins. Leicester and Legia could knock the Italian side, however, with two wins of their own.

Group D: Eintracht Frankfurt, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce, Antwerp

Frankfurt have won three of their four games this season and will qualify as group winners if they beat bottom side Antwerp in their next match. Antwerp need to win both of their matches to have any chance of finishing second as they are bottom on one point. Olympiacos and Fenerbahce are likely to challenge each other for second place, with six and five points on the board. However, either of the sides could also knock Frankfurt off top place with two wins.

Group E: Galatasaray, Lazio, Marseille, Lokomotiv Moscow

Marseille and Lokomotiv Moscow have no wins and trail group leaders Galatasaray and second placed Lazio in Group E. Galatasaray are three points clear at the top of the table and a win against Marseille in their next match would give them a great chance of finishing first. But, Lazio know a win against Lokomotiv Moscow and Galatasaray in their last two fixtures would see them finish as group winners. Marseille and Moscow have a chance to finish second, but they must win both of their remaining matches.

Group F: Braga, Red Star Belgrade, Midtjylland, Ludogorets

Ludogorets will be eliminated from the Europa League if they draw their upcoming match against Belgrade. Braga are in control with nine points from four matches and a win against Midtjylland would definitely secure second place for the Portuguese side. A win and a draw for Braga would see them top the group, while Belgrade need two wins to top the group and one win should see them head into a play-off position in second.

Group G: Bayer Leverkusen, Real Bets, Celtic, Ferencváros

Ferencváros have no points from four games and they cannot finish higher than third place. Bayer Leverkusen know a win in their next match against Celtic would guarantee top spot in Group G as the German club are top on ten points. Real Betis have seven points and the best chance of taking second place. If the Spanish side beat Ferencváros and Celtic lose they will cement a runners up spot. Celtic then know that two wins are needed to stand any chance of qualifying as they are third on six points.

Group H: West Ham, Dinamo Zagreb, Genk, Rapid Wien

Group H leaders take on bottom side Rapid Wien next. A West Ham win would see the English side win the group and the same result would eliminate Wien from the competition. Similarly, second-place Dinamo Zagreb would secure a play-off match against a former Champions League side if they beat Genk in their upcoming match. West Ham and Zagreb remain the favourites to progress, but losses for either side would see Genk and Wien back in contention to qualify.

How Did We Choose our Europa League Predictions?

When forming Europa League betting tips, we consider various factors relating to the fixtures and teams. Below are some of the areas we consider before making any football predictions and tips.

Predictions

Statistics

Looking at statistics helps to see team form, player streaks and any potential trends, such as both teams to score or high and low scoring matches. Noticing form and trends in individual teams can help to select an outright match winner and other accompanying Europa League tips.

Favourites

Pre-tournament favourites are important to consider when making Europa League predictions. Previous performances in European competitions can show how far a team is likely to go in the tournament. Ultimately, if a team has had previous success in the Champions League or other high-profile tournament, they are more likely to be considered favourites in many matches.

Group Standings

Performances in the group stages give a good insight into how a team or individual players could perform in later fixtures. If a team wins every fixture in their group, then they may become favourites in the knockout stages. Alternatively, if a side just edges through the group standings in second, they may have less of a chance of further victory. Often, in World Cup predictions, a nation that wins their group convincingly has a good chance of progressing through the knockout phases.

Previous Winners

If a team has previously won the Europa League or the Champions League, they could be more often selected in predictions and tips. Overall, winners may have proven experience in elite competitions that could increase their chances of success.

How to Bet on the Europa League?

There are various ways to bet on the Europa League finals and fixtures this season. Bookmakers should have a range of markets to choose from when placing a wager on this competition. Some of the most popular single bets on fixtures include outright match winners, under/over total goals, both teams to score, correct score bets and anytime goalscorers.

However, there are many future bets that bookmakers will provide so bettors have a wide selection when using their Europa League predictions. Some future markets may cover outright tournament winners, who could go the distance and win the entire competition.

Other future betting markets could also have odds for team performances, for example, the team that could score the most goals. Alternatively, individual player betting selections are available, where punters can choose a player they think may win the tournament’s golden boot.

More individual player betting selections could include the goalkeeper who keeps the cleanest sheets or a player who provides the most assists in the tournament.
