Benni McCarthy, the former Manchester United first-team coach and South African football legend, has registered his first victory as head coach of Kenya’s Harambee Stars. Guiding the team to a morale-boosting 2-1 win over Chad in an international friendly. This victory marks a significant milestone for McCarthy, who took over the reins in March 2025. It comes at a crucial time as Kenya prepares to co-host the 2024 CHAN later this year.
The Harambee Stars started the match on the front foot, displaying attacking intent and hunger from the outset. Debutant striker Emmanuel Osoro opened the scoring in the 17th minute, finishing off a precise cross from Ben Stanley Omondi. Osoro, who had missed an earlier chance, made no mistake this time, giving Kenya a deserved lead. Just before halftime, Osoro turned provider, setting up David Sakwa to double Kenya’s advantage in the 45th minute. Capping off an impressive first half for Kenya.
Chad, who had held Kenya to a goalless draw just days earlier, responded with renewed vigor after the break. Their persistence paid off in the 60th minute when Ali Mahamat Adam capitalised on a defensive lapse to pull one back for Les Sao. Despite increased pressure from Chad in the latter stages, Kenya’s defense, marshaled by Bandari FC goalkeeper Farouk Shikalo and a reshuffled backline, held firm to secure the win.
McCarthy’s tactical adjustments were evident, with nine changes to the starting XI from the previous match. The midfield pairing of Alpha Onyango and Austine Odhiambo provided stability and creativity. The versatile Ben Omondi contributed both defensively and offensively. Osoro and Sakwa’s performances up front were particularly noteworthy, with both players showing sharpness and composure in front of goal. Odhiambo, who recently replaced Victor Wanyama in the squad, also impressed with his energy and vision in midfield.
Following the match, McCarthy didn’t mask his positive outlook on the team’s development. He is also excited for the forthcoming CHAN tournament, which Kenya is set to co-host with Tanzania and Uganda. He expressed his optimism, stating that the team possesses significant talent. They have historically performed well in CECAFA tournaments held at home. We will do well,” he said, highlighting his belief in the squad’s potential. He also urged patience from fans and media, emphasising that building a competitive team is a process that takes time.
