How Enosh Ochieng has Taken the Kenyan Premier League by Storm
1963-1976
The league was initially known as the Kenya National Football League from its creation in 1963. It became Kenyan Super League in 1973 and finally Kenyan Premier League in 1998.
Over the years the league has kept a record of top scorers in the likes of Maurice Ochieng who ended the 1976 season with 26 goals. In the 2006 season, Boniface Ambani ended the season with 21 goals.
2007-2009
Allan Wanga made his debut appearance in the Kenyan Premier League with Tusker FC. Born in 1985 and currently, in the Kakamega Homeboyz club, he closed the 2007 season as the top scorer with 23 goals.
The 2009 KPL season was remarkable for the Sofapaka club as following the promotion and relegation rule of KPL had just been promoted from the Kenya National League to join KPL.
The Sofapaka exceeded expectations by topping the Kenya Premier League standings with their topscorer John Baraza recording 15 goals alongside Joseph Emeka from the Tusker club in that same season.
2010-2015
John Baraza, gave his best yet again in the 2010 season and bagged the top scorer KPL title of the year with 15 goals as well as winning the Confederation Cup. In 2012, John Baraza recorded more goals and finished the season as a KPL top scorer with a total of 18 goals.

During the 2015 season, Gor Mahia finished first in the Kenyan Premier League standings. They beat Sony Sugar 1-0 in the final match to retain the title.
Gor Mahia achieved the same feat in the 1976 season and thus became the only club in Kenya to defend the title and win it twice in the Kenyan Premier League.
2016-2020
John Mark Makwatta currently of the Zambia Super League club ZESCO United F.C. ended the 2016 season as a top scorer with 15 goals. Masoud Juma, now a forward for Difaâ Hassani El Jadidi, and the Kenya national team ended the 2017 season with a total of 17 goals.

Three different players tied as top scorers; Allan Wanga currently in the Kakamega Homeboyz club appeared a second time as a top scorer with 17 goals, Umaru Kasumba also finished the season with 17 goals, and Enosh Ochieng currently playing for Ulinzi in the Kenyan Premier League and the Kenyan national team also scored 17 goals bringing the season to a remarkable end.

The 2021/2022 season was another exciting one in the Kenyan Premier League, with Tusker FC crowned champions. However, Derrick Otanga was the standout player in the league, recording 16 goals to help Kenya Commercial Bank Sports Club finish 7th on the log.
Otanga currently plies his trade for Alittihad Misurata SC in the Libyan Premier League. The 2022/2023 season started on November 19, 2022, and matches will likely span until mid-2023 before the highest goalscorer can be determined.

We are not surprised that Benson Omala currently leads the table of the top goal scorers so far this season.
The Gor Mahia superstar was second on the goalscoring chart for the 2022/2023 season, finishing the season with 25 goals. With over 15 more games to go, we expect Omala to bang in some more goals before the end of the season.
Our experts have also rated Erick Kapaito to give Omala a run for the prize thanks to his influence for Tusker F.C. as they eye their 14th Kenyan Premier League championships.
